Technology management is much like; well the word technology stinks many. Think about all the wonderful things that make modern life better; cell phones, laptops, software, the internet, all these are great examples of technological advancements that have brought about new and improved ways of doing things. And like technology itself technology has evolved over the years and has developed in different forms and kinds. There are three levels of technology management therefore, there must be three things in technology management, which are hardware, software, and networking. Let’s take a look at each of these three levels: Hardware includes things like digital watches, cameras, and the like, Software on the other hand consists of programs for doing things, and then Networking is what connects everything together. So, what are the components of technology management then?
For technology management to occur properly there must be an assessment of what is currently being utilized in the marketplace, what is needed to be improved upon, and what can be done to integrate those improvements. These are known as technology planning milestones. Once the technology planning activities are underway, there will need to be an analysis of how best to apply those technologies and the applications therein. This is known as technology management analysis, and this is where technology planners will explore solutions to issues.
There are several dimensions of technology management, and these include learning objectives, learning approaches, technology management goals, and learning outcomes. Learning objectives are what drive the learning process, and these objectives may be specified by the company or they may be determined by the team examining the technology. Learning approaches may be formal or informal; they also serve as guidelines for assessing the technologies, and discovering the learning objectives. Finally, technology management goals are what guide the technology in use and its adoption.
One of the first steps a technology team will take when it comes to managing its own project is to establish leadership. Technology leaders will typically lead a technology team, and they often act as mentors to the rest of the team. A technology leader has the ability to get funding from venture capitalists, and they will often have their own office space, or they may work in teams of only two or three people. These individuals will bring a wealth of knowledge and experiences to the table and will play a major role in driving the project forward. Other individuals on the technology management team may also become involved in the process, but they typically will not be leaders so much as followers.
Technology management teams will often engage in activities that bring the staff in and out of their office. Some of these activities include training sessions, group product demos, and case studies. The whole goal of these activities is to create a culture of continuous learning within the technology team, and to ensure that all members of the team are working on the same project. By doing this, they will be able to integrate technology in their work, and they will also be able to increase their knowledge about technology-related topics.
Once technology is well integrated within an organization, the next step is to come up with a series of learning objectives. Learning objectives are short-term goals that will help to drive technology towards its full operational capability. These objectives will typically take the form of technology improvements that take one step closer to becoming a “real” technology solution. For instance, let’s say that we’re operating under the assumption that customer satisfaction is a key factor in determining the overall value of any given technology system. In this scenario, the learning objective might be to make sure that customer service is always better than it was before technology was implemented. This objective can actually be implemented today through various practices and is just one of the many that technology teams use.
Technology management teams will also need to consider how to apply technology planning in the strategic business planning process. They should establish leadership roles for key personnel who can then plan technology investments. They should also explore solutions for funding sources so they can properly fund technology projects. If there is not adequate funding in place, technology planning might not be able to get off the ground in the right way.
As technology takes shape in the workplace, learning objectives, technology planning, and evaluation will all come into play. They will be driving force the implementation of new technology and will help to determine whether or not it is “good enough.” If they find that it is not good enough, they might have to rethink their strategy and try again. By properly integrating technology in all aspects of business, a team can increase their profitability and competitive edge. In order for technology to truly be applied in all aspects of a business operation, the team must have the right people, the right technology, and the right information in order for them to truly make technology application work.
